Effect of Cold Rolling on Age-hardening Behaviors of Al-3Mg-1Cu Alloy

Age-hardening behaviors of cold rolled Al-3Mg-1Cu alloy were investigated with different reduction rates by means of hardness measurements, electrical conductivity measurements, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). After 1h solution treatment (ST) followed by artificial aging (AA), Al-3Mg-Cu alloy shows three stages of age-hardening reactions until peak hardness. By introducing cold rolling (CR) between ST and AA, the age-hardening behaviors change. Higher CR rate leads to higher hardness, CR also accelerates the precipitation process, which corresponds to the results of DSC. By TEM observation, existence of GPB zones was confirmed by diffraction pattern and the rod-shape precipitates was found to preferentially form along dislocations.
